Feeling nervous about joining a gym is far more common than most people admit.
You might worry that everybody else will be fitter than you, that you will not know what to do, or that you will walk into a room where everyone seems to understand rules nobody has explained.
Those concerns make sense—especially if your only picture of a gym is a busy room full of equipment, mirrors and confident-looking people training alone.
XO Fitness in Ilkley is designed differently. You are not given a keycard and left to work it out. You start with a conversation, then enter a coached session where somebody is responsible for showing you what to do.
Here is what the process actually looks like.
Step one: a short intro call
The first step is not a fitness test or a sales presentation. It is a free introductory call.
We ask what has prompted you to look for support, what you would like to change and what has made training difficult before. You can ask how the sessions work, what the options cost and anything else you are unsure about.
You do not need to prove that you are serious enough or fit enough. The call is there to see whether XO is a sensible match for what you need. There is no obligation to join.
Step two: a one-to-one consultation
Before joining the small-group sessions, every new member has a one-to-one consultation.
This gives us time to understand your experience, goals and any injuries or physical limitations. If you have never lifted weights before, that is useful information—not a problem.
You can tell us what you are worried about without doing it in front of a room full of people. We can explain what will happen next and make sure your coaches have the context they need.
What happens when you arrive for your first session?
You arrive at XO in The Moors Shopping Centre in Ilkley. A coach greets you, shows you where to put your things and talks you through the session.
There may be up to five other members training, but nobody expects you to know the programme or copy what an experienced person is doing. The coach demonstrates each movement and helps you practise it at an appropriate level.
Your first session is not an exam. There is no prize for lifting the heaviest weight and no punishment for needing an exercise explained twice.
The aim is to give you a successful starting point: enough challenge to feel that you have trained, without pretending that your first day should look like somebody else's hundredth.
“What if everyone else is fitter than me?”
Some people in the room probably will be fitter or stronger than you. Others may be newer, returning after time away or working around their own limitations.
That does not matter because the session is coached individually. Two people can perform different versions of a movement or use very different weights while still training together.
You do not need to get fit before starting. Training is how you become fitter.
Most XO members did not arrive as experienced lifters. They learned through being coached, one session at a time.
“What if I do something wrong?”
You will almost certainly need help with something. That is why the coach is there.
Nobody is born knowing how to squat, hinge, press or choose the correct weight. A good coaching environment expects questions and corrections. Being shown a better position is not a sign that you have failed; it is the service you came for.
In a normal gym, not knowing what to do can leave you feeling exposed. At XO, asking and being coached is normal.
“What if I cannot keep up?”
XO is not a follow-along class where everybody must move at the same speed.
Sessions are capped at six people, which allows the coach to adjust exercises and loading for each person. If a movement does not suit you, it can be changed. If you need more time to learn something, you get more time.
You are there to work at the right level for you—not to survive somebody else's workout.
What is the atmosphere actually like?
The easiest way to describe it is coached, friendly and normal.
People work hard, but the room is not built around shouting, showing off or making beginners feel as though they are in the way. Members talk, encourage one another and get on with their own training.
“It's really hard to express anything but praise for the amazing place XO is. I've been a member for 10 months now and I can truthfully say I have never been fitter, stronger and happier. The coaches blow me away supporting me through all the post-menopause blips and day-to-day events, keeping me focused and reminding me why I'm doing this.”Joanne Harrison, XO Fitness member, Ilkley — Google Review
That support is not reserved for people who already feel confident. It is how confidence is built.
What we do not expect from you
You do not need:
- previous gym experience;
- fashionable gym clothes;
- a certain level of fitness;
- detailed knowledge of exercises;
- the confidence to train alone;
- a perfectly clear goal.
You only need to be willing to have an honest conversation and take the first step.
Nervous is allowed
We cannot promise you will feel no nerves before your first session. Starting something unfamiliar often feels uncomfortable.
What we can do is make sure you are not left alone with those nerves. You will know where to go, somebody will be expecting you and a coach will guide you through what happens next.
If you are in or around Ilkley and have delayed joining a gym because you do not feel ready, book a free intro call. You can ask every question first.
Nervous is allowed.
No pressure, no commitment and no expectation that you should already know what you are doing.
