Choosing a Gym

XO Fitness vs a Normal Gym: What Is the Difference?

If you are looking for a gym in Ilkley, the first thing to understand is that XO Fitness is not really a normal gym.

A normal gym gives you access to a room full of equipment. That can be exactly what you need if you already enjoy training alone, know how to build a programme and are confident progressing it yourself.

XO is for people who want the training taken care of. Every session is planned and coached, with no more than six people to one coach. You still do your own exercises and work at your own level, but you are never left to wander around wondering what to do next.

Neither model is automatically better for everyone. The useful question is: which one are you actually likely to use consistently?

What you get from a normal gym membership

With a normal gym, you are mainly paying for access:

  • the building and equipment;
  • the freedom to train whenever the gym is open;
  • the option to follow your own programme at your own pace.

For an experienced, self-motivated gym-goer, that freedom can be ideal. You may not need someone watching every set or checking whether you have turned up.

The difficulty is that access alone does not solve the problems that stop many people training. You still need to decide what to do, learn the movements, judge the right weights, track your progress and keep going when work or family life becomes busy.

That is often where a cheap membership becomes poor value. It costs less each month, but not if you barely use it.

What is different at XO Fitness?

At XO, the coaching is the product.

You begin with a one-to-one consultation so we can understand your starting point, goals, training history and anything that needs working around. From there, you train in coached sessions lasting around an hour.

Each session is capped at six people per coach. The coach explains what you are doing, watches how you move, helps select the right weight and adjusts exercises when needed. As you get stronger, the training progresses with you.

You do not need to arrive with a programme. You do not need to know whether today should be “legs” or “upper body”. You book the session, turn up and get coached. That removes a lot of the thinking that makes training easy to postpone.

Is it a fitness class?

No. Although other people are training at the same time, it is not a class where everybody follows the same movements at the same pace.

One person might be learning a movement for the first time while somebody beside them is lifting considerably more weight. Someone managing a sore knee or shoulder can have an exercise adjusted without being separated from the group.

The small group creates energy and accountability, but the coaching remains individual.

Will anybody notice if you stop coming?

This is one of the biggest practical differences.

In a normal gym, anonymity can feel comfortable. It also makes disappearing easy. Nobody knows whether you planned to train on Tuesday, and nobody is expecting you when Tuesday gets busy.

At XO, the coaches know you by name. You train alongside familiar people and your progress does not vanish into a spreadsheet nobody looks at. That does not mean being shouted at or made to feel guilty. It simply means you are part of an environment where showing up is normal and your effort is noticed.

“Almost a year in and training has never felt so good. A team of amazing coaches, great people to train alongside. Honestly one of the best decisions I've made to join XO Fitness. I'd recommend it to anyone.”Edward Young, XO Fitness member, Ilkley — Google Review

Why does XO cost more than a normal gym?

A normal gym membership costs less because you are buying access rather than regular coaching.

XO costs more because a coach is actively involved in every session. The small-group format spreads that coaching cost across a maximum of six people, making it more accessible than paying for one-to-one personal training each time you exercise.

We do not publish a one-size-fits-all price in an article because the right option depends on how often you want to train and what support you need. We explain the options clearly during the free intro call, with no obligation to join.

Which option is right for you?

A normal gym may suit you if:

  • you already know how to train safely and effectively;
  • you enjoy exercising alone;
  • you reliably follow your own programme;
  • access to equipment is all you need.

XO may suit you better if:

  • you have joined gyms before but struggled to keep going;
  • you are unsure what to do or whether you are doing it correctly;
  • you want somebody else to plan and progress your training;
  • you value coaching and accountability;
  • you want a friendly training environment without paying for one-to-one PT every session.

The wrong choice is not joining the “wrong kind” of gym. It is repeatedly paying for a setup that does not give you enough support to use it.
